Signed for LIverpool Football Club in 1960 as a 15 year-old ground staff lad, eventually signed professionally in 1962. Made a first team debut in May 1963 and broke into the first team in 1964. Left the club in 1978 to join Swansea City for 2 seasons and retired in 1980.

Captained Liverpool from 1969 to 1973, being the first Liverpool captain to hold a European Trophy (the UEFA cup) in 1973.

Awarded the MBE in 1977.
