by matt

is probably best remembered for his goals which helped the most successful ever Liverpool team to win two European Cups in 1981, 1984.

Alan's football career started in 1972 when he signed as a professional with Newcastle United and made his league debut as an eighteen year old in 1973.

After playing nearly 200 games for the Magpies, the late Bob Paisley broke the British transfer fee for a full back when he paid £330,000 for Alan in August 1978. During his 7 year spell at Anfield Alan played over 350 games for Liverpool and won a haul of winners' medals including:

  • 5 league championships
  • 4 league cups
  • 4 charity shields
  • 2 european cups
  • 2 full England caps

Alan's seventeen year career as a pro, ended at Wrexham in 1990 following a knee injury. It was here he played his 500th game in the league.
